MELBOURNE, March 6 AAP - Former Oarsome Foursome rowers James Tomkins and Drew Ginn blitzed the men's coxless pair at the Australian championships today, signalling their world title intentions.

The pair won the world crown in 1999 and today's win was a major step toward gaining national selection for the world rowing championships in Seville, Spain, in July.

Their time of 6:23.51 was not far off their best, although conditions at Lake Nagambie, outside Melbourne, were tough.

Gold medal favourites in the women's pair, Monique Heinke and Emily Martin, led home a class field which included seven members of last year's world champion eight.
