New Zealand's SCOTT DIXON has captured the Indy Racing League season- opening Indy 300 in Florida, taking the lead on the final pit stop to edge Brazilians GIL DE FERRAN and HELIO CASTRONEVES.

The 22-year-old Kiwi became only the third man to win an IRL race in his series debut.

Reigning IRL series champion Sam Hornish was 10th. The American was a lap behind the leaders.
