St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - New York Yankees starter David Wells was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays because of a stomach virus.

Jeff Weaver got the nod instead and pitched 7 2/3 strong innings to earn the victory in a 7-1 New York win. The righthander allowed just six hits and one run as the Yankees reduced their magic number for clinching the AL East to two.

Weaver, acquired in early July from the Detroit Tigers, improved to 4-3 as a Yankee, including 4-2 in eight starts. He has won his last three starts and has a record of 10-11 with a 3.62 earned run average this season.
