Recent rain puts squeeze on hay harvest

WEST LAFAYETTE, IND. -- Recent rains put a damper on what was shaping up to be a banner hay production year, according to Dave Petritz, professor of agricultural economics and director of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service.
"We had a promise of a good hay crop, and then all of a sudden it just started raining and raining and raining," Petritz said. "Now it's one of two things --either the hay has been cut and it's laying out there in the field under rain, or farmers have not had a chance to cut it and that means the quality is declining as the hay gets more mature."
Petritz said either case means that there will be less high-quality hay this summer, something dairy farmers and horse owners should keep in mind.
