US Jet Fuel Demand Won't Recover Until Midyear, Agency Says

With the latest available data still showing the US airline industry reeling from the attacks of Sep. 11, the Air Transport Association (ATA) does not expect to see a return to normal air passenger traffic until the middle of this year.

"By mid-year we may see normal traffic again," said Bruce Swierenga, chief economist at the organization.

Until then, the bad news for refiners is that US demand for jet fuel is likely to remain softer than in the first half of 2001.

Most recent figures from the ATA show that revenue passenger miles for both domestic and international flights operated by US airlines were 20.3% below year-ago levels (see table).
