Enron Near Top of Fortune 500

Fortune magazine issued its annual list of the top 500 US companies by revenue earlier this week, and, much to the surprise of many energy industry observers, disgraced energy trader Enron nabbed the fifth spot in the survey.

The magazine said it used bankrupt Enron's restated results for the first nine months of 2001. Even if the figures had been extrapolated to include the full year, Enron still would have been in fifth place, behind Ford, Fortune said. Retail chain Wal-Mart was first, followed by Exxon Mobil and General Motors.

Enron has yet to disclose preliminary or audited financials for full-year 2001. The company reported revenues of $139 billion for the first nine months of last year, however, monies that came...
