EPA Says CBM Hydraulic Fracturing Not a Public Health Threat
In a move sure to cheer the oil and gas industry, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concluded that hydraulic fracturing used in coalbed methane wells to extract natural gas poses little threat to public health.
An EPA study, announced in the Federal Register this week, signals that the agency will not regulate hydraulic fracturing under the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), experts say.
The EPA's conclusion provides an "I told you so" moment for the oil and gas industry that has been asserting that the hydraulic fracturing process already is well regulated by state authorities and is not an environmental risk.
