Worldwide Emissions Up 13%, IEA Says

A report released last week by the International Energy Agency (IEA) shows that carbon dioxide emissions are on the rise and the energy-hungry US is mostly to blame for the jump in emissions.

The IEA report concludes that carbon dioxide emissions from energy use globally is 13% higher in 2000 than in 1990.

Carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels like oil and coal are blamed primarily for global climate change and there has been an effort to curtail it since the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1990.

According to the IEA, carbon dioxide emissions from fossil- fuel combustion increased to 23.4 billion tons in 2000 from 20.7 billion tons in 1990.
