Anadarko Bags its Third Discovery in Eastern Gulf of Mexico

HOUSTON -- Anadarko Petroleum said a well on its Spiderman prospect has resulted in its third discovery in the eastern Gulf of Mexico this year. The field is believed to be predominantly natural gas, but an Anadarko spokeswoman said she was unable to confirm this.

In a separate statement, partner Spinnaker Exploration said the 140 feet of net hydrocarbon pay found at Spiderman exceeded its pre-drill estimates for pay thickness. Spinnaker's pre-drill estimate of potential reserves was 325 billion cubic feet of gas equivalent.

Oil and gas drilling has only recently resumed in the Eastern Gulf, which was previously off limits for exploration because of opposition to drilling off the Florida coast.
