HOUSTON -- Natural gas was supposed to be the fuel of the future, the ideal source to power North America's ever- increasing electricity requirements. However, soaring natural gas prices and the possibility of short supplies are prompting developers of electricity generating plants to opt for other fuels to power their facilities while still complying with stronger environmental regulations.

ConocoPhillips looked at this developing trend and saw a business opportunity. Demand for bottom-of-the-barrel refinery-waste products, petroleum coke and raw bitumen as well as coal could grow if power producers built integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) plants to generate electricity.
