Greenpeace Attacks Planned LNG Facilities in Mexico

California's ongoing liquefied natural gas (LNG) battle was ratcheted up another notch on Monday when the environmental group Greenpeace released a study criticizing the efforts of ChevronTexaco, Sempra and Royal Dutch/Shell to build two LNG terminals in northern Baja California.

The report follows a decision last Thursday by the California Public Utilities Commission allowing San Diego- based Sempra to pipe natural gas from its proposed LNG terminal near Ensenada, in Mexico's Baja peninsula.

Greenpeace accuses the companies of zeroing in on northern Mexico to avoid strict environmental laws and local opposition in California -- while still enjoying relatively easy access to California's energy-strapped markets.
