STOCKS - AUSTRALIAN INDEX OPENS HIGHER - FEB 13, 2002.

MELBOURNE, Feb 13 Asia Pulse - The Australian sharemarket opened higher today, despite a more cautious US market and on the back of media giant News Corp reporting a loss for the half year.

The Australian indices were again boosted at the start for the second day running by good individual results from Coles Myer, Coca-Cola Amatil, the Commonwealth Bank and Boral.

News Corp today posted a first half net loss of $A1.04 billion after abnormal charges and has scaled back its forecasts for full year operating income growth.

The loss for the half year was worse than the $A475 million loss reported in the same period last year.

At 1010 AEDT, Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was 5.7 points higher at 3486.8.
