MAZDA TO HALT PRODUCTION OF RX-7 SPORTS CAR.

TOKYO, March 26 Asia Pulse - Mazda Motor Corp. (TSE:7261) announced Monday it will cease production in late August of the RX-7, the only mass-produced sports car powered by a rotary engine.

The dwindling sports car market and the model's failure to meet government auto emission standards set in 2000 are behind the decision, company officials said.

On April 22, the automaker will release the RX-7 Spirit R, in a limited production run of 1,500 units. The final version of the series will come in three types, including a two-seat, five-speed manual transmission model, and will be priced at 3,398,000 yen (US$25,485) to 3,998,000 yen.
