AUSTRALIAN WEBSITE LAUNCH TO HELP FARMERS IDENTIFY PESTS.

CANBERRA, May 1 Asia Pulse - The launch of a website containing the Australian plant pest database has been hailed as a major step towards helping quarantine and trade officials, scientists and ultimately, farmers.

A creation of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Organisation (CSIRO) and Plant Health Australia, the site includes descriptions of 74,000 separate insects, viruses, bacteria and roundworms that can play havoc with crops and other plants.

Plant Health Australia chairman Andrew Inglis said one of the biggest problems in identifying a possible pest was the sheer numbers from which to choose.

"Because there is so much information out there on pests, you can't go through books and papers looking for it," Mr Inglis told AAP.
