NEW LAWS AIM TO BLUNT MARKET DOMINANCE OF AUSTRALIA'S TELSTRA.

CANBERRA, Dec 9 Asia Pulse - Telstra will be forced to open its accounting operations to more scrutiny after the Australian Democrats today sided with the government on new laws blunting the telco's market dominance.

The package of laws is aimed at weakening Telstra's market power by splitting its retail and wholesale accounting arms to make the company's business more transparent to competitors.

The split would also reveal any Telstra cross subsidies, preventing the use of wholesale operations to boost the retail division.

The package was aimed at swaying senators opposed to the eventual full sale of Telstra, helping ease concerns a privatised company would be free to use its market dominance to crush competition.
