AUSTRALIAN WATCHDOG SAYS TELSTRA A RISK TO COMPETITON.

SYDNEY, March 6 Asia Pulse - Australia's top competition watchdog Allan Fels has ignited a fresh war of words with Telstra Corp Ltd (ASX:TLS) by saying that the country's largest telco is a risk to competition.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) chairman said Telstra used its market power to stifle competition, which had failed to meet expectations when the industry was fully deregulated six years ago.

"The outcomes as regards competition have not really met the expectations of 1997," Professor Fels told an Australian Telecommunications Users Group conference today.

"The commission's analysis is that progress is slowing."
