AUSTRALIA'S WOOLWORTHS READY TO COMPETE WITH ALDI.

MELBOURNE, July 8 Asia Pulse - Woolworths Ltd (ASX:WOW) chief Roger Corbett said today he did not fear competition from Aldi, although he respected the German supermarket chain.

Speaking after a business luncheon in Melbourne, Mr Corbett told reporters Aldi was an effective competitor, but relatively small.

"They have something like 600 lines, while Woolworths have between 25,000 to 35,000 different items," he said.

Mr Corbett also welcomed the appointment of Graeme Samuel as the new head of Australia's competition regulator.

He said Mr Samuel had made significant contributions to Australia and had been a good choice to succeed Allan Fels as chairman of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
