KOREAN MINISTRY TO HELP SMALLER CARRIERS COMPETE IN MOBILE PHONE MARKET.

SEOUL, Sept 4 Asia Pulse - South Korean Information and Communication Minister Chin Dae-je said Thursday he would favor smaller wireless carriers in collecting bandwidth fees as part of the ministry's plans to help KTF and LG Telecom better compete with market leader SK Telecom (KSE:17670).

"In order to encourage competition in the mobile phone market, the ministry will set up a guideline favoring competitors against top player (SK Telecom) by the end of this year," Chin told a press conference.

The ministry has collected bandwidth charges from wireless carriers according to their number of subscribers and other factors.

In 2002, SK Telecom paid 110 billion won (US$ 93.5 million) for using its bandwidth to the ministry, while KTF and LG Telecom...
