SONY'S PLAYSTATION 2 SALES IN S KOREA RISE 21 PCT IN DECEMBER.

SEOUL, Jan 16 Asia Pulse - Japan's Sony Corp. said Friday sales of its PlayStation 2 video game console in South Korea rose 21 per cent on-year in December.

Helped by Christmas and the yearend holiday shopping season, Sony Computer Entertainment Korea Inc., the subsidiary of the Japanese electronics and entertainment giant, sold 50,000 consoles last month, the company said in a press release.

"We expect total shipments of the PlayStation 2 in South Korea to rise to one million units by the end of June," said Kang Hee-won, a spokesman at Sony's Korean subsidiary.

"We also plan to encourage domestic video game publishers to gain a global foothold this year," he added.
