NEC DEVELOPS LOW-POWER SYSTEM LCD FOR CELL PHONES.

TOKYO, Aug 6 Asia Pulse - NEC Corp. (TSE:6701) has developed a new low-power system LCD that can reduce the overall power consumption of a cell phone by 10-20 per cent.

The device is designed to display high-resolution television programs on a cell phone screen. Because it consumes less power, it allows the phone to operate longer on a battery.

System LCDs integrate the control circuitry directly on the panel. The industry is working to develop the products because they can be designed thinner than conventional LCD panels, which are controlled by separate, dedicated chips. To date, the trade-off has been higher power consumption, but NEC's new system LCD consumes 60 per cent less power than other system LCDs and around 10 per cent less than a conventional...
