TOKYO, Sept 24 Asia Pulse - Nippon Yusen KK (TSE:9101) is putting information technology (IT) to work in a variety of roles, from assessing the impact its ships have on the environment and improving efficiency to functioning as alarm systems in case of maritime attacks.
The major shipping company in June 2003 introduced a system that collects data from about 500 ships worldwide, including speed, fuel consumption, distance traveled and weather.
When a ship reaches its destination, the information is automatically tabulated and transmitted via satellite to Nippon Yusen's headquarters in Tokyo. Before introducing the system, such data was tabulated by hand and mailed to the firm.
