INTEL and VDC last week agreed to drive the deployment of Vietnam's first wireless 'hotspot', the 802.11-based Wireless Local Areas Network (WLANs).

VDC deputy director Nghiem Xuan Tinh said the 'Wi-Fi' service would be spread to big cities, industrial parks and high-density residential areas across the country in the near future.

He said the service would be very cheap and would be post- or pre-paid so as to attract more customers.

"In anticipation of the upcoming regional SeaGames, we plan to establish hotspots at airports, hotels and sports centres. This will allow mobile users, who may be participants or business visitors to the event, to easily access information and handle business affairs in more locations," Tinh said.
