Tire makers flex muscle in run-flat field
Rubber & Plastics News, April, 2002 by Roger Schreffler Rubber
Slow out of the gate, Bridgestone Corp. is marshaling its vast research organization to move more earnestly into the run-flat tire field.
A decision in January to team with Continental A.G. adds European muscle to the undertaking. It remains to be seen whether this new partnership can slow the progress of the mega-alliance of Groupe Michelin, Pirelli S.p.A., Goodyear and Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd., all working to advance Michelin's Pax system.
``It could prove to be the tire industry's version of the VHS-Beta war,'' said one observer. ``Sony Corp., if you recall, tried to promote its Beta (analog video recording) format independently, while Matsushita Electric lined up partners. Sony lost.''
