A small California company is marketing what it claims is the first major improvement on the technology that created female contraceptives such as the diaphragm and cervical cap.
The FemCap, developed by FemCap Inc., is made of silicone rubber and is latex-free, making it acceptable to users who are sensitive to latex allergens, the company said. Available commercially for four years in Europe, the FemCap won approval for sale in the U.S. from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has no known local or systemic side effects.
The last 12 years of clinical trials the device required were paid for by a grant from the U.S. government, said FemCap President Alfred Shihata, who invented the product.
