Gates expands timing belt reach

Gates Corp. has purchased Mectrol Corp.'s polyurethane power transmission and motion control belt business to expand its technology, product and customer base.

Gates has formed a new company, Gates Mectrol, to operate the timing belt business, and about 180 of the Mectrol Group of companies' global work force of 580 will transfer to the new business, spokesmen from both companies said. The purchase includes three plants and other production assets.

Neither company plans any layoffs and Mectrol indicated all employees at the Salem site will retain their current positions.

Financial terms were not disclosed.
