MAN Roland reaches accord at Offenbach

MAN Roland has reached agreement with workers at its troubled Offenbach facility that will introduce more flexible working hours and safeguard the company's workforce until the end of 2006.

The press manufacturer says the cost cutting measures will enable the Offenbach plant to return to financial health following several years of large losses. It also secures the sheetfed division's place after MAN Group chairman Rudolph Rupprecht had hinted that it could be spun off as a separate entity.

Murray Lock, marketing director at MAN Roland GB, says that the deal is an achievement considering the inflexible nature of the German unions. He says: "All manufacturers will have to be flexible in the future and the German unions are coming round and recognising that....
