There are few more appealing sights to wake up to than the Church of San Giorgio basking in early morning sunshine across the Venice lagoon. Especially on Christmas Day.
Just for a change, I cut loose from the in-laws and roast turkey to enjoy last Christmas with my wife and two daughters savouring the grandeur of Italy's most intriguing city.
Our base was the stylish four-star Hotel Londra Palace, bang opposite San Giorgio at the mouth of the Grand Canal, and a two-minute stroll from St Mark's Square.
