On television, it looked so simple: The president shows up, shakes a few hands, makes a speech and gives a Des Moines printing company its metaphorical 15 minutes of fame.

But when President George W Bush landed in Des Moines March 1 and called on the employees at The Printer Inc., the visit was the culmination of a fast-paced 96 hours of preparation.
