OUT OF TOWN last week, I missed the NBA draft on television, and so picked up a copy of the San Francisco Chronicle the next morning in search of the fate of Oregon guard Frederick Jones.
Based on pre-draft projections, I started reading from the bottom of the first round, and scanned up for a dozen picks or so. No Freddie.
Only mildly surprised, I flipped to the inside page, and went through the entire second round. No Freddie.
Poor Freddie, I thought. How disappointing.
Whereupon I read the first-round selections more carefully, and learned that "poor Freddie" certainly doesn't apply to Mr. Jones, about to become a millionaire after being selected with the No. 14 pick by the Indiana...
