SPRINGFIELD - Particleboard maker SierraPine Ltd.'s factory in east Springfield is paying fines of up to $1,000 a month while the company tries to figure out how to cut the plant's visible emissions to comply with an air quality rule.
The company has paid $18,000 in fines over the past two years for repeatedly violating a rule that limits the "opacity" - or density - of visible industrial fumes.
The company paid the most recent fine - $1,000 - last week, according to Lane Regional Air Pollution Authority documents. The agency enforces state and federal air pollution laws in Lane County.
