Otteson served residencies at Oregon Health & Science University and St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland and completed a fellowship in cytopathology at the Medical College of Virginia. Prior to coming to Eugene, he had had worked at Rio Grande Pathology Associates in Albuquerque, N.M.
