Creator of Honda's ASIMO sees robots caring for elderly.

A Honda Motor Co. engineer who created the ASIMO robot said Tuesday he hopes the white humanoid machines will one day work in restaurants or care for elderly people to help Japan deal with its aging population.
Masato Hirose, who joined the automaker in 1986 and has since led its humanoid robot research and development, said the firm does not want to create a pet robot such as the machines that have grown popular in recent years.
''It is our desire to create a robot that will be able to offer various kinds of support'' to humans, Hirose said in a speech at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan, accompanied by two ASIMOs that walked around.
