3 power companies to donate 2.7 bil. yen over scrapped nuke project.

SUZU, Japan, Aug. 27 Kyodo

Three Japanese power companies said Friday they will donate a total of 2.7 billion yen to the city of Suzu, Ishikawa Prefecture, in effect offering compensation for a scrapped project to build a nuclear power plant there.

Kansai Electric Power Co., Chubu Electric Power Co. and Hokuriku Electric Power Co. will each provide 900 million yen to the city by the end of March next year, they said.

''We will use the money for economic development in our region,'' Suzu Mayor Osamu Kaizo said at a news conference.

The power companies said they have decided to make the donation to the city in view of the local government's support and cooperation in connection with the nuclear power project.
