After years of outcry from the beleaguered and greatly diminished online publishing sector, the BBC's Online service is getting an independent investigation ordered by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport. This is aimed at allowing the BBC to justify the [pounds sterling]100m-plus it spends on online services. The British Internet Publishers Alliance will be hoping the report will confirm what it has always claimed, that the BBC has misspent the licence fee and is distorting the online media market with its huge resources.
It hasn't been a bad week if you're in the online advertising and content space; it looks like things are finally turning the corner.
