Software developers clash over Web accessibility role

Software firms are divided over the role they should play in Web accessibility, which is leading to confusion about the future of Web design.

Leading software developers like Macromedia and Adobe say they're anxious to support the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C's) accessibility standards, but many want to preserve artistic functionality in their Web design products. Such companies are in disagreement about whether Web accessibility should be a default feature of newly developed software.

In its latest version of Flash MX, Macromedia has pre-empted criticism by ensuring that its animated design product is compatible with screen readers and incorporates text-based functionality. That's also true of Dreamweaver MX and its Web management tool Contribute 2....
