Online music sales, via downloads and subscription, are expected to grow rapidly from a current base of 0.33% of total music sales to 5.5% in 2008, claims a new report.
All online music sales, including CD, download and subscriptions, are predicted to grow by 22% annually over the next five years, representing a 240% increase from $1.1bn (0.7bn [pounds sterling]) to $3.9bn (2.4bn [pounds sterling]) in 2008.
In terms of just downloads and subscription services, sales are expected to hit a high of $1.8bn (1.1bn [pounds sterling]), the equivalent of 5.5% of $32.6bn (19.8bn [pounds sterling]) sales globally.
