Britain may or may not be at war by the time you read this piece. Alternatively, hostilities might be about to begin; or, less likely, have ended. Whatever, the domestic impact will be limited. A Labour government, belligerent in the defense of British interests, necessarily mutes Conservative criticism of the deployment of military force. Moreover, no one in Britain really kids themselves that this is anything other than America's war against Iraq. We differ from our European partners only in being willing (and capable) of offering the U.S. support--thus denying ourselves the indulgence of impotent detachment.
