Once again the throngs thronged for the launch of the latest boys' toy as Nintendo's GameCube hit Europe at midnight on 3 May. Two days after the launch, GameCube had notched up sales of 75,000 units in the UK with 50,000 advance orders. Shops duly ran out of stock and the necessary hype and column inches were assured. But once the furore dies down, will Nintendo have the legs to keep up with Sony and Microsoft?

Nintendo's GameCube is the last of the next generation consoles to launch in Europe, with newcomer Microsoft unveiling the Xbox in March this year, and Sony's Playstation2 (PS2) ahead of the game with a November 2000 launch.

While PS2 is streaking ahead in terms of sales (Cosole sales), it remains to be seen whether Nintendo can overcome the poorly...
