The Buggles once claimed that `video killed the radio star' but the internet could be cited as an accessory to murder. The world wide web has long posed problems for record companies by enabling consumers to download their favourite tracks without paying for the privilege. It has allowed piracy on an unprecedented scale.

The record companies have concentrated most of their efforts on shutting down websites that offer free downloads where no revenue reaches the company or artist, such as Napster. But a recent judgement makes it clear that record companies are now also prepared to take action against any third parties that assist consumers in downloading music from the net.
