While the lagging economy has hurt the tapes market, the bigger trends affecting it were consolidation, rising raw material prices and environmental issues. Additionally, most experts agree the way to have consistent growth in tapes is for new applications to be developed.

"Tape manufacturers are very close to new product development programs throughout all sectors," observed Glen Anderson, executive director of the Pressure Sensitive Tape Council (PSTC), which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. "I think new applications are being looked at. The application and utilization of tape to streamline assembly is constantly opening up opportunities."
