My Brother Has Autism

Exceptional Parent, The, July, 2007

My Brother Has Autism By Melody Igafo-Teo When people think "children's books," we usually think about books written for children. My Brother Has Autism, by Melody Igafo-Teo, is a wonderful children's book written by a child. How refreshing! Melody's older brother, Michael, 10, has autism. Melody manages to capture all that is different and all that is the same about Michael as compared to her other brother, Sebastian. She sees Michael in the context of his own special skills and as one member of what to her is a typical family. The drawings, like Melody's prose, display an awareness that enhances the words. Melody's mother, Jackie, adds a post-script in her four-page account of Michael's special life with autism.

This may be a children's book written by a child, but we believe it is for people of all ages. Melody's insight and approach to Michael and her family deserve the EP Symbol of Excellence.
