The Problem of Continuity
Organized groups that challenge the established two-party system through elections may do so by nominating candidates for office or by exacting pledges of support from candidates who run under an existing party label. Such challengers face a hard road, subject to constraints arising from inadequate resources, efforts at suppression, and the inertial forces that work against mobilizing support.
