The Great Lakes are a dominating influence in the histories of Canada and the United States. For centuries they have provided sustenance and carrying capacity for indigenous peoples, waves of migrant peoples, and for millions of animals, fish and plants. The waters themselves exceed 22,000 cubic kilometers and constitute roughly 20 percent of the world's fresh surface-water supply.
