Every aspect of a psychotherapist's contact with clients--the first phone contact, the first session, the therapeutic focus, and the environment--will have an impact on the client and his or her capacity to change. Although the most important factors impacting the outcome of psychotherapy are the therapist's base of knowledge, training, mastery, and ability for empathetic connection, the therapeutic environment plays a role as well.
