The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) cites attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) as one of the most frequently diagnosed psychiatric disorders among children in the United States (NIMH, 2002). According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.), ADHD is characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity; has a prevalence rate of 3-5%; and accounts for 3050% of all referrals to mental health clinics (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 1994).
