Five months before his February ascent to CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer may well have caused privacy advocates to choke on their Cheerios. At a press conference last September, Ballmer (who was then Microsoft president) said Web developers and e-commerce partners could speed e-business transactions by using a special cyber-language to consolidate and share consumer personal data stored on frequently traveled websites. Internet businesses, including financial services, could then, "empower people anytime, anyplace, and on any device," said Ballmer, meaning if there was no separation of proprietary information between sites, then customers wouldn't have to, say, keep re-entering their credit card numbers at e-commerce sites.
