CANDY BUYING ISN'T ALWAYS about analyzing sales figures, poring over spreadsheets and examining growth charts. For instance, 2004 PROFESSIONAL CANDY BUYER OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD winner Matt Kirk says his job involves much more than stocking shelves with top-selling items.

Kirk, director of purchasing for consumables at Brooks Pharmacy, stresses that candy buying is about listening to consumers and trying to meet their needs.

"A lot of people look at numbers instead of looking at what the customer wants. If you look at the top 100 items and carry just the top 100 items, are those the 100 items consumers want, or are they the top 100 that the manufacturer wants them to buy?" he asks.
