THIRD QUARTER REVENUES SAG, BUT SOME SOME PROFIT GAINS ARE MADE
As chemical companies continue to report third-quarter results, the effects of cost- cutting are showing on bottom lines. Air Products and Chemicals, Borden Chemicals and Plastics, Monsanto, and Occidental Petroleum had gains net income increases revenue declines, while American Cyanamid, Grow Group, Loctite, and Witco managed greater profit gains than revenue gains. Others continued to suffer deteriorating margins in the ongoing economic slump (table).
Areas of strength give hope: Air Products cites volume and price advances in merchant oxygen and nitrogen, and improved prices and strong volumes in almost all chemical product lines. American Cyanamid says cost reduction efforts in its chemicals...
