Chinese chemical companies have been notorious for violating international patent rules and have often profited from duplicating chemical synthesis processes. However, the Chinese government revised its patent laws in Jan 1993 and signed the International Patent Cooperation Treaty in Jan 1994 in order to curb intellectual property abuses. Many companies have reduced the risk of patent violations by forming wholly-owned subsidiaries in China or by selecting trustworthy partners for joint ventures.
