PRODUCERS OF pigments can expect more hardship ahead, despite the recent brisk demand from coatings and plastics producers that has sent sales of several large pigment producers soaring at double-digit rates in first-half 2000. Clariant, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, and Engelhard all reported strong pigments sales, particularly for high-value specialty products, but sector sources say the industry has a lot of problems to overcome.
